The best speakeasy-style and hidden bars in Hong Kong

The best speakeasy-style and hidden bars in Hong Kong

No one has actually been to a speakeasy, well, unless you're 100 years old and have lived through Prohibition in the 1920s and early 1930s, that is. What we call 'speakeasies' in Hong Kong are themed bars inspired by the vestiges of the Prohibition era, bars that are intentionally hidden from plain sight, lacks signage, discreetly located in obscured entrances, and showcasing cocktails and experiences designed to look like you're going back in time.  Discovering these bars is already part of the drinking experience, and drinking at these 'hidden' gems can be a magical encounter. And while locating these 'secret' bars is not a daunting task, finding the very best is entirely a different matter. Read on to discover Hong Kong's best-disguised drinking holes and bars-within-bars that serve quality drinks that will keep you coming back for seconds.  RECOMMENDED: Looking for new bars? Here's a list of all the hottest openings in the city.

The 50 best restaurants in Paris right now

At Time Out Paris, we’ve been eating and drinking our way around the City of Light for a long time. So we know what we’re talking about when it comes to good food – and right here, you’ll find our absolute favourite spots for 2023. We’ve scoured the streets of Paris, reviewing every restaurant worth its salt in the capital. The result: our definitive ranking of the 50 best restaurants in Paris right now. (Unsurprisingly, lots of them also won big at our latest Time Out Food and Drink Awards.) This year, fine-dining restaurant Le Clarence has taken our top spot for its intricate seasonal menu, and the newly-managed Grande Brasserie (taken on by Adrien Spanu in 2022) has made its way into the rankings for the very first time. But there’s no need to clutch your purse: this list isn’t just about the finer things in life. Whatever your budget, you’ll find something worth eating here – from sausage and mash in homely bistros to the best ham sandwich you’ve ever tasted for €5. Time Out Market: the best of the city under one roof

Time Out Market: the best of the city under one roof

For more than 50 years, Time Out has discovered and championed the best of city culture – from art to theatre, clubbing to food and drink. Now that curation has leapt off our magazine and web pages and into physical reality as Time Out Market – a place where you can immerse yourself in the best stuff in your city, all under one roof (and a few with expansive outdoor spaces), all with the Time Out seal of approval. Our expert editors know their field and their city inside-out. We are constantly crawling the city in search of the best restaurants and bars. When we review spots, we show up unannounced and pay our own way to keep things honest (see our editorial guidelines here). That in-depth knowledge has helped us to curate a dream-team lineup of chefs and bartenders for Time Out Market so that you always get the best of the city under one roof. The chefs, restaurants and bars we consider for Time Out Market have already been celebrated by Time Out editors – so before the first drink is poured or the first dish is served, we know it’s a five-star destination. The result is a unique dining and cultural venue, curated without fear or favour and entirely based on what we believe is exceptional. If it’s good, it goes in the magazine or on the website. If it’s great, it goes in the Time Out Market. Read on to discover the Time Out Markets you can visit right now, and what’s coming soon to a city near you. Your table awaits…

The best Greek food in Sydney

The best Greek food in Sydney

These restaurants make a strong argument for switching permanently to a Mediterranean diet. You can do fancy Greek at the Apollo where you can order up saganaki (that's fried cheese) and slow roasted lamb shoulder, or you can hit up an old school gyros joint, and smash grilled Greek pita bread jammed with crisp, fatty pork bits. Whether it's a late night snack or a full family feast, these are the best places to eat Greek food in Sydney. If you're working on a budget try one of the best cheap eats in Sydney.  After Italian? Here's our guide to the tastiest Italian restaurants in Sydney. Keep eating at the absolute best restaurants in Sydney.

The best things to do in Sydney in July

The best things to do in Sydney in July

Winter is well and truly underway in Sydney, and there are heaps of reasons to get into the spirit of the season. Along with all the pre-existing perks of getting to live in Sydney during winter (eg: reasonably mild-ish temperatures, shimmering coastlines and wattle explosions), there is also an entire host of cold-weather activities and adventures happening across every corner of the city.  This year, we're looking at four days of French cheese, wine and culture going down for the epic Bastille Festival at Circular Quay. We'll also be warming up with the Sydney Ramen Festival (because, obviously), then getting into a magical state of mind at the Wizardry High Tea and Harry Potter-themed Yule Ball celebrations that will be going down all month. We'll also be heading down to Canberra for a Christmas in July festival (who needs Strasbourg?) and then feasting on another festive lunch closer to home with fine-diner Nel's monthly Sunday Christmas lunch. This July is looking pretty snug. Want something to do, right now? Check out our list of everything happening in Sydney today.

13 Best hiking trails in Hong Kong

13 Best hiking trails in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is known for many things; its dynamic culinary scene, architectural mix of old and new, and of course, that iconic skyline. But that’s not all, as our concrete jungle is also wrapped in lush verdant hills with magnificent islands and dramatic rock formations surrounding us, and the best way to take in the city in all its mountainous glory is, yes that’s right, a hike. So, whether you’re a hiking novice, leading the charge, or simply want to check off some of Hong Kong’s must-hikes, we've outlined our favourites with tips and directions to help you on your way.  RECOMMENDED: Prefer things at a different pace? Go for a stroll in one of Hong Kong's Chinese-style gardens instead.

The best rooftop bars in Hong Kong

The best rooftop bars in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's skyline is legendary. Centred on Victoria Harbour, it's a nightly festival of neon and LED lights flickering against glass towers. There are many places in the city where you can glimpse these majestic skylines, but the best ones are those where you can drink and dine. Hong Kong has a bundle of rooftop bars that offer jaw-dropping views of the city. Whether you're planning a romantic night under the stars, a celebration with your nearest and dearest, or just looking for somewhere to get away from – or above – it all, one of these watering holes in Hong Kong is sure to have you covered.  RECOMMENDED: Also, check out these picturesque places to catch the sunset, or go for an adventure to Hong Kong's best spots for stargazing.

The best sex shops in Sydney

The best sex shops in Sydney

Sex shops get a bad wrap, but the skeezy, back-alley stereotype is far from the norm in these sexually enlightened times. Greater sex positivity has helped society shed many uptight taboos and lifted the veil on the erotic hijinks many of us choose to dabble in. As the saying goes, a workman (or woman, or non-binary person) is only as good as their tools, so it's worth investing in some quality hardware if you care about how you get your kicks. We've hunted down Sydney's finest purveyors of bedroom playthings, from cheeky toys to hardcore fetish gear – and if you cannot visit in person, they all deliver, discreetly and direct to your door.

Mary's Underground

Mary's Underground

4 out of 5 stars

Mary’s Underground is a restaurant, yes, but it’s also still very much a music venue continuing to pay its respects to the site’s former life as the Basement (Sydney’s home of jazz, soul and world music). In fact, when you walk in the nostalgia is strong, but they’ve moved the stage off to the left-hand side and spread everything out so that every table luxuriates in its own bubble of generous floor space. Four nights a week, you can pick from a smorgasboard of music and acts ranging from jazzy adults-only cabarets to grungy rock and indie artists. On the menu, you'll find OG Mary's burgers and trashy-but-good American diner faire.

Cinespia Cemetery Screenings

Cinespia Cemetery Screenings

It isn’t summer in L.A. until the first cemetery screening brings hoards of movie-lovers to Hollywood Forever, toting folding chairs, picnic blankets, snack spreads and lots of booze. Each year, Cinespia brings classic cult favorites to the hallowed resting place of Old Hollywood greats—and a couple of off-site screenings, too. For 2023, Cinespia started things off at L.A. State Historic Park and on the grass just outside of the Greek Theatre, but has now settled into a steady lineup of cemetery showings. For each evening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, pack a picnic (yes, booze is allowed), pose in the photo booth and enjoy DJ sets, dance parties and all sorts of other magical mischief that’d otherwise be strictly forbidden behind the cemetery gates. The outdoor screenings are an L.A. rite of passage, a quintessential summer experience and one of the best film venues in the city. Just be sure to get your ticket early, arrive early, pee early… it’s a popular affair, to say the least.

23 things only tourists do in Sydney

23 things only tourists do in Sydney

Our beautiful city welcomes about 20 million travellers every year and we love sharing our award-winning restaurants and Instagrammable sites with each and every one of them. But out-of-towners sure do have some pretty predictable habits. Here are the things that make them stand out. 1. Choosing to spend Saturday nights in Darling Harbour. 2. Pronouncing Coogee as "Coooogee". 3. Taking arty photos of a bin chicken because you think it's a rare bird.  4. Dining at City Extra. 5. Forgoing sunscreen. 6. Stocking up on opals and Ugg boots. 7. Choosing the outdoor seats on the Manly ferry. 8. Expecting change from a $50 when you’ve bought a round of drinks. 9. Watching street performers in Pitt Street Mall.  10. Not tapping off on the light rail/train/bus. 11. Trying to park in the CBD. 12. Assuming you won’t get a parking fine. 13. Expecting to get coffee after 3pm. 14. Paying to get to the top of Sydney Tower Eye. (Psst... If you buy a drink, the view is free.) 15. Taking a dip in the city fountains. 16. Looking for koalas in Hyde Park. 17. Expecting to take a heap of selfies on the Sydney BridgeClimb. No phones allowed, we're afraid. 18. Assuming it never rains in Sydney.  19. Expecting the bus to show up on time/at all. 20. Missing the last ferry to or from Manly and thinking, “Oh, an Uber can’t cost that much”. 21. Trying to get into the Ivy without ID. 22. Thinking the train goes all the way to Bondi Beach. LOL. They want to make it harder for you to get there. 23

A stunning Swiss mountain village is offering people £50,000 to move there

A stunning Swiss mountain village is offering people £50,000 to move there

Incredible scenery, clean air, a good quality of life… Moving to Switzerland has many benefits attached, but what puts most people off is the cost of living in one of the world’s foremost economies. Perhaps getting paid £50,000 to make the move would help? This is what Albinen, in the southern Swiss canton of Valais, is proposing. The gorgeous village is offering families of four people 25,000 Swiss Francs (around £22,300) per adult and 10,000 Swiss Francs (around £8,900) per child to move there, to try and reverse a drastically declining population, caused by people moving away to nearby cities for employment. Sounds appealing, right? Unsurprisingly, there are some conditions attached to this sweet deal. Firstly, the offer is only open to under-45s. Still reading? There’s a bigger catch: you need to be a Swiss citizen with a permit C residence. That can be obtained by living in Switzerland for five years if you’re an EU citizen, but British citizens need to double that number to a whole decade. If you’re still interested, you’ve got to commit to Albinen for the long-term and live in the village for ten years, in a home worth at least 200,000 Swiss Francs (around £178,000). If you take up the offer and move out before the ten years is over, you’ll need to repay that golden gift when you leave. Those who do qualify and do stay can expect to live in a stunningly scenic Swiss village, with snow-capped mountain views at every turn, gloriously clean air, tons of sunshine every yea

Atenció, superfans de 'Ted Lasso'! Aviat, podreu reservar una nit al The Crown & Anchor, el pub favorit de Ted, situat al barri londinenc de Richmond. The Crown & Anchor SÍ que existeix.
